8. The Spice Way – Pure 100% Sumac

The Spice Way - Pure 100% Sumac

Modern food manufacturers treat spices as regular industry made flavors. We believe them to be a lot more. Spices are from nature, and therefor cannot be identical each time in color and apearance and when you grind them, they cannot be created into a powder without using industrial methods. With the sumac, it is very obvious.

If you see a sumac that is shiny, it is probably because the use of lemon salt. Lemon salt is used to make it brighter. Hibiscus is also commonly added in the industry to the sumac before grinding it, because it attracts the liquids in the sumac when grinding it, assuring that it will be left with a soft powder. Salt is often used to reduce cost. Salt if very cheap and when you add it in substantial amounts, you can sell much cheaper sumac.

10. Love In Shadow

Love In Shadow

If you are a fan of Aaron Turner and Sumac then by all means you should pick this up. Like the second album, What One Becomes (2016)  (see my review) the long tracks are all suites that move through various sections. Don’t overlook the first album,  The Deal (2015)  (see my review), which is sparser and more contemplative than the others.

The first cut, is the longest, and opens with a NWOBHM galloping beat. It ends with a quiet, somber section with organ played by Faith Blade opens with a strong bass rhythm that sounds like Pink Floyd One of These Days. Turner’s harsh vocals are bellowed, not growled or screeched.
